SMAR SW Review - Let's Fight for Our Rights on Not Only Rock

SMAR SW - "Let's Fight for Our Rights" (1993)

I got to know SMAR SW thanks to my partner, who is a punk music lover.

The album "Let's Fight for Our Rights" is his favorite in the oeuvre of Rzeszów punks, so I started it with some enthusiasm.

"Euthanasia" emerges first.

The title of the song itself brings to mind controversy.

What is the song about? "Sezon" exclaims the following words: "Do not dare to judge my existence, my goals and my aspirations are mine. I want to vomit when I look at you, that's why I'm leaving, because I wanted to live differently."

To sum up; It is an individual's protest against the surrounding reality, which we have a lot of on the album, and this is only the first song.

"For Those Who Forgot" is an appeal to people who have sold themselves for a comfortable life.

"This is a piece for those who have lacked the strength to face adversity.

For all those who have allowed themselves to be defeated by money, the uncertainty of tomorrow and the torture of everyday life. For all those who have forgotten."

This is only the beginning of the appeal. And what next? Further on, it is even more emphatically... Just turn on the number.

In "There Is No Purpose" we see that the lyrical subject sees his future in dark colors; seems to be resigned, because there is nothing to fight for:

"I would like to free myself from everyday life, I am afraid of the gray of the next day. There is a wall of hatred in front of me, my future is a black void."

"The Logic of Power" (by the way, one of my favorites on this album) is a classic example of a punk song - it deals with the condemnation of the authorities, the rulers:

"They set laws and restrictions, you give yourself to them - you have to obey. x2

I don't want controlled freedom. I reject the future they have set.

I don't want to die just because the bastards in power want it."

In "Reconciled with the World" we still have the battle for the freedom of the individual and... We see something that is still a painful truth about the lives of young people today:

"(…) Why does an apartment become the pinnacle of our dreams at the age of twenty? Man is free or does not exist.

Why do we become terrified of the dead prospect of our youth? With the remnants of dreams in our hands, we admit that it is impossible to live the way we wanted."

"False religion" is a condemnation for believers who, according to the lyrical subject, are unable to take responsibility for their actions and lives, so they entrust them to a deity, because: "because only fear explains faith, inferiority complex, self-insecurity, to entrust someone with your gray life, so that he can give him meaning and a goal for you" and "because it is easier to answer in heaven, than to judge oneself. Money for God, no one's money, and here on Earth someone lives on it."

On the other hand, the punk "Strength" is a call for aggression towards the opposition group - skinheads.

In the 90s of the twentieth century, battles between punks and skinheads were the order of the day, so it is not surprising that the people of Rzeszów found a point of reference for their work here as well:

"Before you hit me, think carefully, maybe I'm stronger than you.

We are here, we are not going anywhere, the time has come for you, fascist motherfuckers."

"Holocaust" is a reference to bestial practices used during one of the greatest massacres in the history of mankind - World War II.

The musicians recall these crimes and... they juxtapose them with the political "cream", about which they do not have a very flattering opinion (to put it mildly): "Today there are also those who want to restart the furnaces. They want a new crime, there are more and more of them."

"Let's fight for our rights", as the title song itself indicates, proclaims to fight for ourselves in the world of those in power by "strange politicians" (as another punk - Robert Brylewski - said in an interview for television in the early 80s):

"We will unite, together we will destroy you, because in this only life there is hope for us.

We will not succumb, there is no price on us, we will go through the fight we have started to the end."

The lyrics of the songs, despite the fact that twenty-three years have passed since the premiere, are very relevant in the 21st century.

And, unfortunately, there is nothing to be happy about.

On the other hand, in the musical layer, it is in vain to look for complicated riffs and melodies - "Let's Fight for Our Rights" is a typical punk album.

It is supposed to be simple, honest and hit the mind.

Did the guys succeed?

Definitely yes.

The music on this album stays in the head for a (very) long time.

This is truly one of the best comments on the reality in which we have to live.

I will be tempted to say that "Let's Fight for Our Rights" is one of the best punk-rock albums of all time.

Today, the band no longer exists.

SMAR SW ended its activity after releasing an album under the all-encompassing title "Samobójstwo".

It's been twenty years since the breakup of the group and it's gratifying that despite the passage of years, new fans fascinated by these sounds are still pouring in.

Moja ulubiona płyta Smarów, fajnie by było gdyby również była jej reedycja na CD, sam kupuje teraz ta kasetę ze względu na pamięć o tym zespole, i że jest dla mnie ważny. I mam pytanie jak Można by było wiedzieć kiedy by wyszła reedycja Samobójstwa?

Taśma matka Walczmy o swoje prawa została skradziona z Silvertonu a w paserkę bawi się Zima. Proponował nam parę lat temu jej odkupienie. Wcześniej oszukał nas na koszulkach Smarów. Typowy handlarz punkrockiem :(

Jeśli chodzi o reedycje Samobójstwa staram się by było w tym roku ale nie jestem w stanie podać konkretnej daty na ten moment.
